Mr Ibu was born John Ikechukwu Okafor on October 17th 1961 in Umunekwu village in Eziokwe, Nkanu West Local Government Area in Enugu State.

He attended elementary school and after completing in 1974, moved to Sapele to stay with his brother following the tragic death of his father.

Okafor worked menial jobs in Sapele to enable him sponsor his education and simultaneously support his family. He then worked as a hairstylist, ventured into photography and also worked in a company that produces crates. After secondary school, he was admitted into the College of Education, Yola, but pulled out due to financial difficulties.

He later enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu to study mass communications as soon as he was able to gather the necessary funds.

Following his education, Mr Ibu started his acting career in 1978, joining the popular Nigerian Movie Industry (Nollywood).

His debut came at a time when actors were poorly paid and despite his evident talents, Mr Ibu struggled to make a living from being a thespian.

His debut movie was Rolling Stone which earned him a paltry N5,000.

After toiling for years in unpopular and less-paying roles, Ibu hit stardom as he started receiving leading roles in several films, comedic movies and TV shows.

In 2004, Mr Ibu was featured in the award-winning comedy “Mr Ibu” alongside Osita Iheme.

His bumbling character became an instant hit and henceforth his showbiz name became Mr Ibu.

“Mr Ibu” won Okafor the ‘Best Comic Actor’ award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

She alleged that Jasmine is aware of Ibu’s memory loss which is why she is taking advantage of him and has been parading herself as his daughter when in reality she’s his sidechick.
