According to police sources, the officer had initially responded to a 911 call of a disorderly person on 42nd Street and Broadway at 12:03 a.m. on Feb. 4.
When the officer approached Thomas, the suspect allegedly unleashed a flurry of punches to the patrolman’s face.
Other members of the Midtown South Precinct came to the injured officer’s aid, and placed Thomas into custody.
The officer was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for heavy bleeding and other injuries to his nose and mouth.
Thomas was arrested at the scene and hit with a slew of charges that include assaulting a police officer, assault and harassment, and disorderly conduct.
He was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and held on $10,000 bail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2024.
A second police officer was involved in an unrelated scuffle later on Sunday as cops moved in for an arrest in Manhattan, law enforcement sources said.
The incident happened near the New York Public Library at about 1:45 p.m. – around the same time and place a pro-Palestinian protest was happening where multiple people were taken into custody.
The assault on the officer provoked a strong reaction from the police union and the NYPD leadership.
Patrick Hendry, the president of the Police Benevolent Association, the largest police union in New York, said in a statement: “These assaults on police officers are happening every single day, but we’re not going to let them disappear into the statistics any longer.
“We want New Yorkers to understand exactly what their cops are up against. We need them to hold their elected leaders and the entire justice system accountable. That is the only way the dangerous environment on our streets will change”1.
John Chell, the chief of patrol, also condemned the attack and called Thomas a “coward”.
He said: “You want to know why our cops are getting assaulted? There’s no consequences. We must change this, end of story”.
The attack by Michael Thomas is just the latest in a string of attacks faced by the NYPD.
It follows another violent confrontation on Jan. 27, when a group of migrants, most of whom were released on bail, were caught on surveillance video punching and kicking a police officer and lieutenant when they attempted to break up a large disorderly crowd outside of a shelter, cops said.
The officers suffered bruises and cuts to their faces and bodies.
These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of the police officers and the public, as well as the effectiveness of the bail reform and the immigration policies.
Some critics have argued that the suspects should be deported or held without bail, while others have defended their rights to due process and humane treatment.
This story illustrates some of the challenges and tensions that exist in the society, especially in relation to the law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and the immigration issues.
It also highlights the need for more dialogue, cooperation, and respect among the different stakeholders and communities. Some of the possible lessons that can be learned from this story are:
The police officers deserve recognition and support for their work and sacrifices, as well as accountability and transparency for their actions.
The suspects and the migrants deserve fair and humane treatment, as well as legal representation and due process for their cases.
The public deserves safety and security, as well as information and education on the issues and the facts.
The political leaders and the policymakers deserve constructive feedback and collaboration, as well as responsibility and responsiveness for their decisions.
The story of Michael Thomas and his assault on an NYPD officer is a complex and controversial one, that involves multiple perspectives and factors.
It is not a simple matter of right or wrong, good or bad, us or them. It is a reflection of the reality and the diversity of the society, and the challenges and opportunities that come with it.
It is also a reminder of the importance and the urgency of finding common ground and solutions, that can benefit and protect everyone.
Great Neck, Long Island
Great Neck is a region on Long Island, New York, that covers a peninsula on the North Shore and includes nine villages, among them Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kings Point, and Russell Gardens, and a number of unincorporated areas, as well as an area south of the peninsula near Lake Success and the border territory of Queens.
The incorporated village of Great Neck had a population of 9,989 at the 2010 census, while the larger Great Neck area comprises a residential community of some 40,000 people in nine villages and hamlets in the town of North Hempstead, of which Great Neck is the northwestern quadrant.
Great Neck has five ZIP Codes (11020–11024), which are united by a park district, one library district, and one school district.
The hamlets are census-designated places that consolidate various unincorporated areas. They are statistical entities and are not recognized locally.
However, there are locally recognized neighborhoods within the hamlet areas, such as Harbor Hills, Saddle Rock Estates, University Gardens, and Manhasset.
The Manhasset neighborhood (in ZIP Code 11030) is not considered part of Great Neck. The part of the Hamlet of Manhasset that is considered part of Great Neck includes the Great Neck Manor neighborhood.
Great Neck Gardens is featured on many maps as a name of one such hamlet, even as the name is used rarely if ever by local residents.
