Prosecutors said they were told the mother “was putting her child down for a nap, and accidentally placed the child in the oven instead of the crib.”
“We appreciate all first responders who worked this scene and the prosecutors who went to the scene in order to issue these charges,” Jackson County Prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker, said in a statement.
“We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life. We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.”
On Saturday, Jackson Country Prosecutors charged Mariah Thomas Kansas City for allegedly killing the baby by putting her 1-month-old child in an oven.

She is facing a Class A felony of Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st degree and Death of a Child.
A LinkedIn account for a Mariah Thomas in Kansas City lists her as an editor and copywriter and also English as a foreign language teacher. She is apparently a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
According to some online reports, Mariah Thomas Kansas City faced mental challenges.
A close friend confirmed that to the media, saying Mariah doesn’t think like an adult but rather had a childlike mindset and that their last conversation was on a Monday.
Other reports said Mariah called her father Friday afternoon, urging him to return home immediately as something was wrong with the baby.
Upon arriving, he found Za’Riah deceased in her crib, with a smell of smoke lingering in the air.

On Friday, February 9, 2024, in Kansas City, Missouri, Mariah Thomas mistakenly placed her 1-month-old baby in an oven instead of the crib.
Police responded to a report of an infant not breathing at Thomas’s home.
Responders discovered the child with apparent burns and, tragically, pronounced the baby dead at the scene.
On Saturday, authorities charged Mariah Thomas with endangering the welfare of a child.
Court records do not yet show whether Thomas has legal representation, and no phone listing for her could immediately be found.
According to a witness, the mother “put the child down for a nap and accidentally placed her in the oven instead of the crib.” The statement did not provide further details on how this tragic mistake occurred.
Jackson County prosecuting attorney Jean Peters Baker expressed the gravity of the situation, saying, “We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy, and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life.”

Neighbors spoke to the media about the scene cops caused when they stormed their area Friday.
“Within a matter of minutes I heard sirens. The next thing I know, there’s a baby carrier being transported between the MED-ACT and the house,” neighbor Corrine Foreman said.

“I’m pretty shocked by it and appalled that there’s a death in our neighborhood. It’s sad, especially when it’s a child. No child should be leaving here,” neighbor Amber Morgan said.

Khadiyjah was arrested at a grocery store parking lot in Aliso Viejo and now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.
