A release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office read: “On Friday, August 18, 2023, at 5:00 p.m., deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a person who had been shot at the Mag Pi clothing store on Hook Creek Road, in Cedar Glen.
“When deputies arrived, they located the victim, identified as Laura Ann Carleton, suffering from a gunshot wound,”
The statement said emergency personnel descended on the scene but unfortunately, Lauri had already passed away.
It continues: “Emergency medical personnel pronounced Carleton deceased at the scene.
“During the response to the initial scene on Hook Creek Road, deputies received updates from Sheriff’s Dispatch indicating the suspect, who has not been identified, fled on foot, and was seen on Torrey Road, east of Highway 173,”
The statement shed light on how police chased down the Lauri Anne Carleton suspect who was still armed and presumably attempted to engage authorities because he died in the apparent confrontation.
“Deputies located the suspect near Torrey Road and Rause Rancho Road, armed with a handgun,” the statement from the San Bernadino County Sherif’s office continues.
“When deputies attempted to contact the suspect, a lethal force encounter occurred and the suspect was pronounced deceased.
“No deputies were injured during the incident.
“The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail also responded and assumed the investigation. Through further investigation, detectives learned the suspect made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag that stood outside the store before shooting Carleton.
“This investigation is ongoing, and no further details are being released. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Homicide Detail at 909-890-4904. Investigations are still ongoing and police initially struggled to identity Lauri Carleton killer – but he was later named as Travis Ikeguchi.
The deceased is being mourned uniformly in her local community, praised as a pillar of love who has been senselessly killed.
Laura Anne Carleton was known as a staunch advocate for the LGBT community and the local Lake Arrowhead LGBT community praised her in a statement.
“Today was a very sad day for Lake Arrowhead and for the LGBTQ community. Our friend and supporter Lauri Carleton @magpi_shop was murdered defending her lgbtq+ Pride flags in front of her store in Cedar Glen California,” a statement from the Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ group on Facebook read.
“Lauri did not identify as LGBTQ+, but spent her time helping & advocating for everyone in the community. She will be truly missed,” it added.
Another tribute came from a local food co-op, Mountain Provisions, which wrote, “Lauri was a pillar in our community, an immovable force in her values for equality, love, and justice.
“If you knew Lauri you know she loved hard, laughed often, and nurtured and protected those she cared about.
“She was a force, she loved to crack jokes and wanted to live as joyful of a life as possible. We will continue to stand for the values she so selflessly stood for. Her death will not be in vain.”
Somebody Somewhere star Bridgett Everett also paid tribute to Carleton, noting that this wasn’t the first time the shopowner encountered someone who was unhappy with her flags on display.
“In the past, when someone took down her flag or vandalized it, she’d put up another one,” Everett wrote on Instagram.
“The last time I saw Lauri was, oddly enough, at Lake Arrowhead pride both in the parade and then at a party.
“All that anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has a price. And now, Lauri’s husband Bort, her daughters, friends and community are devastated. And for what?”
At the scene of her death outside her store, a single bullet hole could be seen in the store’s front window, next to which mourners had taped a sign reading: ‘Thank you all for your love.’

Carleton, a mother of nine, was a former Kenneth Cole executive who owned a Magnum Pi store which she operated in Lake Arrowhead.

It also reveals Laura Anne Carleton has been married for the same man for the past three decades and leads a blended family of nine.
The bio reads: “Lauri Carleton’s career in fashion began early in her teens, working in the family business at Fred Segal Feet in Los Angeles while attending Art Center School of Design.
“From there she ran “the” top fashion shoe floor in the US at Joseph Magnin Century City.
“Eventually she joined Kenneth Cole almost from its inception and remained there for over fifteen years as an executive, building highly successful businesses, working with factories and design teams in Italy and Spain, and traveling 200 plus days a year.
“With a penchant for longevity, she has been married to the same man for 28 years and is the mother of a blended family of nine children, the youngest being identical twin girls.
“She and her husband have traveled the greater part of the US, Europe and South America.
“From these travels they have nourished a passion for architecture, design, fine art, food, fashion, and have consequently learned to drink in and appreciate the beauty, style and brilliance of life.
“Their home of thirty years in Studio City is a reflection of this passion, as well as their getaway- a restored 1920’s Fisherman’s Cabin in Lake Arrowhead.

Tributes continued pouring in for Lauri Carleton after being shot by her killer, with actor Paul Feig revealing she was a personal friend.
Travis Ikeguchi
Travis Ikeguchi, 27, has been identified as the killer of Mag.Pi store owner, Lauri Carleton.
Police announced his identity at a news conference held Monday, August 21st 2023.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during the conference that a 911 caller told dispatchers Ikeguchi cut down the flag while he argued with Carleton before shooting her. He also said the suspect yelled “many homophobic slurs” toward Carleton.
Ikeguchi’s social media posts had also been found to contain many homophobic and anti-LGBT content.
A tweet pinned to the top of his X feed showed a rainbow flag in flames with the words “What to do with the LGBTQP flag?”
In a June 28 post, the Ikeguchi account — which included posts on conspiracy theories along with anti-vaccine and anti-abortion content — posted, “Abortion and same-sex marriage are both immoral and are design to destroy humanity one by one. So if someone is pro-abortion and pro-LGBTQP, they are at war against the foundation of family values. –Travis Ikeguchi posted 6/23/2023 6:39am”
A Gab account bearing Ikeguchi’s name — describing the author as “Anti-freemasonry, Anti-zionism, Anti-jesuits, and Anti-paganism, same-sex marriage should be abolished” — pinned a post with a video titled “When You Should Shoot a Cop,” with Ikeguchi stating, “There will come a time that we have to do this.”
“The content of Ikeguchi’s social media posts contained posts critical to the LGBTQIA community,” said Mara Rodriguez, SBCSD’s public information officer.
“We believe he has no firearms registered to him in the state of California,” said Rodriguez. “Based on the investigation thus far, we believe Ikeguchi has not applied for a CCW permit in California.”
Paul Feig
Actor Paul Feig took to Instagram to mourn Lauri Carleton after her killer monstrously took her life in a petty dispute.
Feig wrote: “Our wonderful friend Lauri Carlton (seen in this picture) was murdered yesterday in her store @magpi_shop in Lake Arrowhead by a 27 year old man who didn’t like that she had a large pride flag hanging outside of her shop.
“He ripped it down and when she confronted him about it he shot and killed her. We are all devastated for her husband Bort and her family and the LGBTQ+ community, for whom Lauri was such a true ally.
“Her alleged murderer was later shot and killed by the San Bernardino police and so no longer poses a threat to the community,”
Feig went ahead to warn against the heated rhetoric people make against the LGBT community as it can have real-life consequences, such as inspiring a killer to take the life of Lauri Carleton.
“…This intolerance has to end. Anyone using hateful language against the LGBTQ+ community has to realize their words matter, that their words can inspire violence against innocent loving people. Let’s all keep moving forward with tolerance and love. Let’s not let Lauri’s tragic death be in vain,”
