Karel Mangual, 28, has been arrested and charged with the murders of Chasity Nunez and her daughter Zella in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Karel Mangual was charged with two counts of armed assault to murder and carrying a firearm without a license.

A Worcester mother and daughter were murdered while in their parked car in Worcester Tuesday afternoon.

Mangual was arrested in connection to the murder whilst Dejan Belnavis, another suspect, remains at large.

Who is Karel Mangual Worcester?

Karel Mangual, 28, has been arrested and charged with the murders of Chasity Nunez and her daughter Zella in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Mangual is one of two men accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Chasity Nunez and her 11-year-old daughter Zella as they sat in a parked SUV on Englewood Avenue around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Karel Mangual, who has a history of alleged violence, is charged with two counts of armed assault to murder and carrying a gun without a license.

Police say the crime was caught on surveillance video which shows two men – Mangual and Dejan Belnavis – walk up to the car and murder the women.

“Two people walk up to a vehicle and start shooting the vehicle. Two men run down the street to where witnesses say a white sedan was parked,” said prosecutor David Feraco.

They say the white sedan was seen circling the area before the shooting and took off shortly after.

Authorities identified the owner of the parked sedan who said he had given it to the other suspect, Dejan Belnavis to be using for about a year now.

“The registered owner … stated to detectives that he had let [suspect] Dejan Dante Belnavis use his vehicle and he has had it for about a year,” documents said.

“Shrewsbury police had a motor vehicle accident in their town this year where [the sedan] was involved and Dejan Dante Belnavis was the listed operator.”

Karel Mangual is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing next week, CBS news reports.

According to MassLive, charging documents show officers in Worcester have known Mangual since he was a child.

“Worcester police are “very familiar” with Mangual and have known him “since he was a young child,” the documents said.

Investigators looked at security video footage that found the white sedan circling an area in Worcester before the shooting and showed it leaving the Englewood Avenue/1 Lisbon St. area after the shooting.

“Realizing the need to locate this vehicle after the murder of two people and the danger presented to the public, we used the vehicle’s connected car system through AT&T and we were able to locate the vehicle in Hartford, Connecticut,” police said.

“A check of Belnavis showed that he had a relative who resided close to where the vehicle had been parked in Hartford.”

Investigators reviewed security video footage from Hartford and saw Belnavis and Mangual leaving the sedan, the documents said.

Mangual’s face was visible in the footage.

Both men were wearing similar black and purple shoes, police observed from the footage.

Meanwhile, ccording to a report from MassLive, Karel Mangual was tried as a 19-year-old in Worcester for shooting a man five times and ‘leaving him for dead’.

“Karel Mangual, 19, of 20-A Passway Three, held his shirt over his face after a prosecutor said fingerprints and cell phone records indicate he was involved in the Oct. 4 shooting that left a 25-year-old man in critical condition,” the December 2014 report read.

“Mangual is facing charges of armed assault with the intent to murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm and ammunition without an FID card, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling,” the report added.

His victim survived, but it is currently unclear how much jail time Mangual served for that crime, if any.

Who was Chasity Nunez, Woman Murdered by Karel Mangual and Dejan Belnavis?

Chasity Nunez was an American healthcare professional, graduate student and mother who was killed alongside her daughter in Worcester, MA.

Chasity Nunez and her 11-year-old daughter Zella Aria Milton were sitting in a parked car on a Worcester street when they were shot and killed, allegedly by two men identified as Karel Mangual and Dejan Belnavis.

This occurred the afternoon of Tuesday, March 5th 2024.

According to her Facebook, Chasity Nunez was born June 12th and is a native of Brooklyn New York, currently residing in Worcester, MA.

Chasity is a University of Maryland graduate student and a healthcare professional at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

She is a former Army National Guard member.

Her LinkedIn page describes her as such: “Healthcare professional and current graduate student specializing in data analytics, blending a strong background in the healthcare industry with a passion for leveraging data insights.

Chasity Nunez had two daughters, one of whom, Zella, was unfortunately with her when she was shot in Worcester.

Nunez served four years in the Connecticut National Guard and was remembered for her dedication, resiliency and intelligence.

“Her wit, social nature and dedication to duty made her one of the best Soldiers in our unit. I cannot begin to make sense of why this happened and why her family, friends, co-workers and fellow Soldiers have been robbed of her and Zella. What we can, and must do now, is support one another as we grieve, process this profound loss and honor their memory,” said Major David Pytlik from the Connecticut Army National Guard in a statement.

He also said she was “more full of compassion than anyone I know.”

Dejan Belnavis

Worcester police released a statement searching for Dejan Belnavis who carried out the attacks with Karel Mangual.

“The Worcester Police Department is searching for twenty-seven-year-old Dejan Belnavis. He is wanted for charges connected to the murder of Chasity Nunez and eleven-year-old Zella Nunez. He should be considered armed and dangerous”, the statement said.

“A second individual has been arrested in connection with the homicide and details about him will be released later.
This investigation is ongoing.

National Guard

The National Guard is a state-based military force that becomes part of the U.S. military’s reserve components of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force when activated for federal missions.

It is a military reserve force composed of National Guard military members or units of each state and the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, for a total of 54 separate organizations.
