Who is Jerry Lee Hoffman? Man Charged for Stabbing Middlebury College Student

Jerry Lee Hoffman is a 32-year-old Middlebury man who has been charged with attempted murder for stabbing a college student.

Hoffman faces additional charges of aggravated assault for the Wednesday night incident.

Police say the ‘random’ stabbing occurred when a Middlebury College student and a woman were walking on College Street when Hoffman approached and stabbed the male repeatedly.

The victim and his colleague managed to escape to a nearby apartment and called 911.

The victim was transported to Porter Hospital and later to UVM Medical Center.

He was released from the hospital on Thursday and is in stable condition.

On 03/20/2024, at about 7:51 p.m., the Middlebury Police Department (MPD) received a 911 call from a female reporting she had been attacked on College St. in Middlebury.

Responding officers located Jerry L. Hoffman, born 10/02/1992, of Middlebury, outside his residence on College St.

Hoffman was armed with two knives and refused commands from officers to drop the weapons.

Instead, he fled the scene and a foot pursuit ensued. Officials eventually subdued him after he ran into Otter Creek and finally responded to commands to drop his knives.

Jerry Hoffman was taken into custody and transported to Porter Hospital by Middlebury Regional EMS (MREMS) where he was evaluated for exposure to the cold water.

He was subsequently released from the hospital and transported to MPD headquarters.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a male and female were walking on College St. when Hoffman approached and stabbed the male repeatedly.

The victims were able to flee to a nearby residence and called 911. The male was transported to Porter Hospital by MREMS and later transferred to the UVM Medical Center.

He is currently in stable condition whilst the female was uninjured.

Jerry Lee Hoffman has been charged with Attempted Murder, aggravated assault and resisting arrrest and he is being held at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility without bail.

He appeared in court Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charges and the judge ordered him to be held without bail at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility pending a weight of the evidence trial, as he was deemed a flight risk and a danger to the public.

Hoffman’s lawyer also ordered a mental health evaluation for his client.

Meanwhile, Middlebury College confirmed the stabbing victim was a student but did not release his name.

In a message to the Middlebury College community on Thursday, Associate Vice President of Safety Demitria Kirby and Vice President for Sudent Affairs Smita Ruzicka stated that the male victim is a student at the college and in stable condition.

Dear Middlebury Community,

We are writing to provide an update about an incident that occurred on College Street on Wednesday, March 20, prompting emergency notifications. 

“At approximately 8 p.m., Middlebury Police responded to a reported stabbing on College Street, in a residential area of campus. The Middlebury College Department of Public Safety sent two MiddAlert notifications to the campus community in response,” the message read.

“While gathering more information, we urged our community to stay indoors. Police confirmed on Thursday that a victim was transported to Porter Hospital and later transferred to UVM Medical Center.

“We have since learned that the victim is a student who is in stable condition. The College is working directly with the student to provide all appropriate support. Please note that we are not able to provide more information due to privacy concerns,”

The statement concluded: “Middlebury College offers suggestions about personal safety on page 29 of our annual safety and security report. While nothing can guarantee a crime will not happen, these tips are offered as a supportive measure to improve campus safety for our community.

“We also want to remind you that while we are in the spring break period, the College still provides support for students and employees through a variety of means,”

Middlebury Police Chief Jason Covey said of the incident: “”There is no connection, certainly between the victim and the defendant. And they are not known to each other…And we do not believe there was any interaction between them prior to this, that this was truly random,”

He added of Jerry Lee Hoffman: “He has had arrests in Chittenden County here in Addison County, also Rutland County, I believe four assault type cases,”

This stabbing comes on the heels of a recent deadly stabbing incident in NYC that left a teen girl dead.

Samiya Spain, a 19-year-old NYC teen was killed and her twin sister wounded after turning down the advances of a young male.

The twin 19-year-old sisters were each stabbed in a Brooklyn deli early Sunday, leaving one dead and the other receiving treatment in hospital.

The violence broke out on 4th Avenue at around 2:20 a.m. Sunday. A friend explained that the sisters were at a party and ended up at the deli in the early morning hours.

Police said in a short statement that Samiya Spain died from a stab wound to her chest.

Her sister, Sanyia, suffered a wound to her arm but was in a stable condition.

Middlebury is the shire town (county seat) of Addison County, Vermont, United States.

As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,152.

Middlebury is home to Middlebury College and the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History.

One of the New Hampshire Grants, Middlebury was chartered by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth on November 2, 1761.

The name “Middlebury” came from its location between the towns of Salisbury and New Haven.

Middlebury is located near the center of Addison County in western Vermont.

The town is drained by Otter Creek, which flows from south to north along the western edge of the town, with the falls at the center of the village.

The Middlebury River flows west to Otter Creek out of the mountains.
