A heartbreaking video has hit social media showing the moment police officers brutalised an elderly woman in Agbarho, Delta State.
The video showed the police officers assaulting the woman in Nikoro close, near Eghwere road, Agbarho, Delta State, sparking huge outrage online.
According to reports, the victim identified as Martha Igbigbi was accosted by the police officers who visited her residence to arrest her son who wasn’t available.
It is reported that the police officers who were five in number, including a female, ordered her to accompany them to their police station but she refused.
They proceeded to assault her and tie her up before bundling her into their vehicle.
In the video, the victim who is partly unclad can be heard refusing to enter their vehicle as the police officers dehumanize her.
Officers Involved in Brutalising Delta Woman Nabbed
The Delta State Police Command on Sunday said it is aware of a video that has since gone viral on various social media platforms of “some policemen in the state manhandling a woman in a dehumanising manner.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.
The command said, “After a careful examination of the video clip, it is clear and obvious that the policemen acted in an unprofessional manner unbecoming of police officers.”
The statement read, “The command condemns their act in totality, as no citizen deserves to be treated in such a manner either by the police or anybody.
“Their act is not only inexcusable but unpardonable and will not be tolerated by the command.
“The erring police officers serving at Agbarho Division have been identified, summoned and detained at the command headquarters.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Ali, has directed that internal disciplinary action be initiated immediately and at the end of their orderly room trial, members of the public will be intimated on the outcome.
“The command wishes to reiterate that ‘rope’ is not a police accoutrement and as such, should not be used by policemen in whatever guise while carrying out their duty. It is not in the character of the command to dehumanise and trample on the rights of citizens.”
The PPRO further quoted the CP as assuring members of the public that the policemen concerned will be decisively dealt with in accordance with extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others.
