Nigerian beaten to coma by four South African police officers

South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said a Nigerian man was beaten into a coma by four South African police officers on 9 January 2023.

The incident occurred when a man and his friends were told to produce their identity documents by the police officer.

When the victim couldn’t produce an original copy of his document, the four policemen transported him to the police station, where they beat him senselessly.

The Nigerian man was later admitted to a hospital to receive medical attention where he fell into a coma for nine days.

Ipid spokesperson, Lizzy Suping said the victim and his friends were approached by the police officers who demanded to see their identity documentation on January 9.

“When the victim could not produce an original copy of the required documentation, he was taken to the police station where he was allegedly assaulted and tortured by the officers. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention where he was in a coma for nine days,” she said.

The Nigerian Consulate received information that the man was in a coma because of the beating he sustained from the police officers. The consulate promptly notified Ipid of the attack, after which the police watchdog conducted a thorough investigation.

The suspects include a sergeant and three constables. They were arrested at their workplace and are being detained at the Boksburg police station.

All four would appear before Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 3 February.
