EFCC Arrests 19 Akwa Ibom Varsity Students for Alleged Internet Fraud

Nineteen Undergraduates of Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat-Enin, were on Friday,  April 28, 2023, arrested by operatives of the Uyo Command of the EFCC, for suspected internet-related offences.

They were arrested at their private hostels: Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge both located at Ikot Akpadem in Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scams, fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions and impersonation.

Items recovered from them include several laptops and mobile phones. They will be charged to court as soon as Investigations are concluded.

Reacting, some netizens cautioned the EFCC to stop harassing students just because they see them with laptop.

“Please stop harassing students because you see them with Laptop, everywhere in the world, everything is online in the internet coding, ChatGBT, there is a lot of AI the can work with or make money with, go look for Politician Like Bello Yahaya live student’s alone @officialEFCC,” a netizen wrote.
