Damilola Adeparusi is a Nigerian chef, songwriter, and poet who became famous over an attempt to break Hilda Baci’s world record.

Also known as Chef Dammy, Damilola Adeparusi started a 120 hours cookathon in Ekiti to challenge the one completed just a month earlier by Chef Hilda Baci, real name Hilda Bassey Effiong.

Damilola Adeparusi hails from Ekiti State in Nigeria. She is currently a 300-level student studying at the Federal University Oye Ekiti, Ekiti state.

Chef Dammy or Chef Dami, as some call her, describes herself as a chef, poet and songwriter. Aside being a student, little is known about her until she launched her audacious cookathon.

Damilola Adeparusi stunned social media on June 9th 2023 when she announced the start of her own 120 hours cookathon in Ekiti State. Her target is specifically chosen to beat the 100 hour cookathon of Chef Hilda Baci.

Chef Dammy’s cookathon is being held at FUOYE-JUPEB road, Oye Ekiti. Photos and videos of her carrying out her cookathon has taken over social media and sparked tons of discussions.

The current Guinness World Record for longest cooking time is held by Indian chef Lata Tondon, who cooked for 87 hours and 45 minutes in September 2019.

Whilst Nigerian chef Hilda Baci cooked for longer, 100 hours in May 2023 in Lagos, Guinness World Records are yet to certify her new record. Chef Baci is still waiting on their certification and Guinness has said they are reviewing footage from her challenge.

Meanwhile, Damilola Adeparusi has started her own attempt which has social media divided.

Some are hailing her for her can-do spirit but others are calling her out for attempting to take Hilda Baci’s shine, describing her behaviour as typical of Nigerians.

“Me, I’m a hater o. That cook-a-thon is very tasteless. Capitalising on someone else’s win without even waiting for it to be official is crazy,” one Twitter user said.

Popular internet troll, Daniel Regha also said of Damilola’s cookathon: “Anyone supporting the Ekiti cookathon is an enemy of progress; Yes, competition is a good thing & records are meant to be broken, but trying to stop someone’s success is evil. Hilda should receive a Guinness World Records certificate first, before anyone plans to do a cookathon,”

However, some others gave her full support.

“Why exactly are people hating on Dammy? Hilda didn’t create this thing! It’s an open record for all! Hilda broke someone’s record too! Make a name for yourself Dammy! You deserve all the support in this world! It’s fine if you won’t support Dammy but bullying her is not cool!” another Twitter user said.

As at this writing, Chef Dammy had cooked for over 31 hours for her 120 hours cookathon! We will keep this section updated with her progress.

Nigerian chef Damilola Adeparusi started her own 120 hours cookathon in Ekiti state to attempt to beat a previous record held by Hilda Baci.

Chef Dammy’s 120 hours cookathon is slated to run from June 9th till 13th 2023 and is being held at FUOYE-JUPEB road in Oye, Ekiti.

Interestingly, Damilola Adeparusi’s record might not stand if she hasn’t gone through some bureaucratic issues with Guinness prior to launching.

Although many Nigerians believe she is setting her record against Hilda’s, it is important to note that Hilda Baci’s record has not been verified by the Guinness World Record, so she is currently not the record holder until her record has been certified to have broken Lata Tondon’s 87 hours, 45 minutes cooking marathon record.

Hilda has been publicly in touch with the Guinness World Record team but they are yet to certify her record.

According to their website, it can take up to 16 weeks to verify a new Guinness World Record.

“The current waiting period for all applications is a maximum of 16 weeks. Our current waiting time for reviewing evidence for attempted records is a maximum of 16 weeks,” The Guinness World Record team stated on their website.

Chef Damilola Adeparusi also has to apply to Guinness before undertaking her 120 hours cookathon.

If all these terms are met, then her attempt is credible and has a chance to be certified.
