Chasity is a University of Maryland graduate student and a healthcare professional at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

She is a former Army National Guard member.

Chasity Nunez had two daughters, one of whom, Zella, was unfortunately with her when she was shot in Worcester.

Worcester PD released a statement Wednesday addressing the shooting.

“WPD Detectives Investigate Fatal Shooting,” the statement was captioned.

It read: “On March 5th 2024 at about 3:09 PM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to the area of Lisbon St at Englewood Ave for a report of gunshots.

“Upon arrival, officers located a parked vehicle with two female gunshot victims inside. Both victims suffered serious injuries and were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

“The victims were identified as a mother and her daughter, and they were both pronounced deceased at the hospital.

“This investigation is ongoing. If you have information about this incident, please send an anonymous text to 274637 TIPWPD + your message or send an anonymous web-based message at worcesterma.gov/police. Calls can also be made to the Worcester Police Detective Bureau at (508) 799-8651,”

The statement elicited responses such as: “So sad man Rest In Peace and find who did this and get people like this off the streets making our parks schools stores everywhere we go not feel safe anymore how can we call this place home and things like this are happening to a little innocent baby only 10 at that that’s crazy,”

Another response read: “Absolutely unbelievable and heartbreaking!!!! I could blame the police for not doing a better job. But there are so many people. It’s hard to fault anyone but the person that’s guilty. The city is going straight to hell. Building this giant infrastructure to make our city look like it’s a great place to be… Behind closed doors though is a totally different story.”

Dejan Belnavis, 27, is wanted by police in connection with the deadly shooting of Chasity Nunez and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella, that happened in Worcester, Massachusetts, on March 5, 2024.

Shortly after 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, the Worcester Police Department announced that 27-year-old Dejan Belnavis is wanted on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm without a license.

According to police, Belnavis is about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs approx 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Police warned that Belnavis should be considered armed and dangerous and that anyone who sees him should not approach him, and instead call the WPD Detective Breau at 508-799-8651.

Worcester Police confirmed Wednesday that the two people shot and killed in a horrifying ambush Tuesday afternoon were a mother and daughter.

Chasity Nunez and her daughter were in a parked SUV on Lisbon Street near Englewood Avenue when their car was sprayed with gunfire just after 3 p.m.

Police said both were rushed to a hospital where they died.

“The victims were identified as a mother and her daughter,” police said in a brief statement Wednesday afternoon.

There have been no arrests and there’s no word yet on a motive.

Resident of the neighborhood were stunned by the violence in interviews with WCVB.

“This kind of thing is unusual for the city in general. This was a very violent act,” Worcester police Lt. Sean Murtha.

“It’s awful,” resident Bob Shepard said.

“It’s not the neighborhood. This is a quiet, family neighborhood. You don’t get this type of thing here.”

Other residents said that they heard an eruption of gunfire.

“[The neighborhood is] very quiet, very family-oriented. You know your neighbors. You know your friends. You see them walking around. You’re out, you’re talking with them. To have this happen is just unbelievable,” Worcester resident Maureen Morales said.

Investigators were seen examining a gray Nissan SUV that was parked on Englewood Avenue.

The vehicle had at least four bullet holes on the driver’s side of its windshield and multiple bullet holes in the driver’s side door and window.

Numerous tributes were shared on Facebook to Chasity Nunez of Worcester.

Shared Tina Rivera: “Heartbroken beyond words over the loss of Chasity and her beautiful daughter. They will forever hold a special place in everyone’s heart. Rest in peace angels, you will be deeply missed,”

Arianna Kamal was remembered by the schools she attended as a bright, kind young woman who had her whole life ahead of her.

She had recently graduated from Milton Academy and was in her first year at Middlebury College.

Arianna was involved in various activities, including a first-year seminar called Mindfulness in Education, the MiddMyco organization for students interested in foraging, and the Women in Computer Science student organization. Her professors described her as a brilliant student, a beautiful writer, and an amazing singer.

The College Choir community was deeply meaningful to her during her first semester.
