The shooting and fire killed six family members – although its not clear who died in the fire and who died via gunshot.
Two police officers were also shot.
On Thursday, the shooter was identified as Canh V Le.
He was a researcher and according to his mother had no history of mental illness.
Let’s learn more about Canh V Le below.
Who was Canh V Le?
Canh V Le was the perpetrator of the East Lansdowne shooting that ended in a massive fire and left six family members dead.
On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in a suburban street in East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, a gunman shot and killed six members of his family, including three children, before setting the house on fire and taking his own life.
Two police officers who responded to a report of an 11-year-old girl being shot were also wounded by the gunman, but survived.
The motive for the shooting and the identity of the gunman was initially not revealed yet with the incident being investigated by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office and the Pennsylvania State Police.
On Thursday, the shooter was identified as Canh V Le, a Vietnamese American.
Online records show one Canh V Le was a researcher.
Canh Le was identified by his own mother, Chin Le, as the shooter.
She said she heard her son arguing with his niece before everything went wrong.
Speaking through an interpreter, she said her son, Khan Le, was in an argument with his 10-year-old niece before the shooting started.
Chin Le says he shot five people, including three children, before he killed himself.
“Very sad, very sad. That’s why I tried to help her,” Che said.
CBS News’ Ray Strickland asked the intepreter to ask Chin Le how she and other family members survived: “Did she tell you how they got out?” he asked.
“No. No. Suddenly it happened so fast. Nobody knows what’s happening. Suddenly he’s upset and used the gun,” the interpreter replied.
According to Chin, the Le family moved to the U.S. from Vietnam more than 40 years ago and have been living in East Landsdowne ever since.
Chin Le says her son, Canh Le, was 44 years old, recently divorced and was out of work.
“I asked her about her son, any medical problem? Any mental problem? She says he’s OK – completely normal,” Che said.
Neighbors told the media about the chaotic scenes when police arrived.
“I heard a lot of gunshots as I just came from the store and then I smelled the smoke about 10 minutes later. And I just seen cops come everywhere, running in their vests and everything,” said one resident.
“I heard [them] yelling ‘active shooter, get in the house, barricade, don’t come out,'” a neighbor said.
Neighbor Derrick Richardson recorded cell phone video of the chaotic scene as officers helped an injured officer and called for a medic while they were under fire.
“It was very scary, it was very scary. My whole house was surrounded by police officers. Everybody had their guns drawn. Long rifles and the gunshots,” he said.
Le family dead in East Lansdowne fire and shooting
Six family members died following a shooting and house fire at 58 lewis ave in East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania.
Police responded to reports of an 11-year-old girl being shot in East Lansdowne, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Two officers, David Schiazza, 54, and John Meehan, 44, were shot and the house was set on fire.
The remains of three people were recovered after the shooting and fire on Lewis Avenue in East Lansdowne, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said Thursday.
Three other members of the Le family, who were inside when the fire consumed the home, are unaccounted for.
Earlier in the day, Stollsteimer said all six family members, including three children, were presumed dead. It’s unclear whose remains were recovered from the home.
At a press conference Thursday, the DA described the ongoing recovery mission for the missing family members as “gruesome,” and said investigators had located a human torso among the charred remnants of the home earlier in the day.
A rifle was also found in the house, Stollsteimer said.
Included in the group of presumed dead is the apparent gunman, Canh V Le, who was reportedly having an argument with his 13-year-old niece before tragedy occurred.
Canh Le, 43, was identified by his mother, Chin Le, who heard her son arguing with his niece in an upstairs bedroom when he said he was going to get a gun.
She added that she is not sure why her son, who had no known history of mental illness, had a gun.
The mother of the alleged shooter said that her other son, Xuong Le, and his wife, Britni Le, are also presumed dead, as are there three children, NaKayla, 13, NaTayla, 17, and Xavier, 10.
Le said her husband removed her from the home before shots were fired. Her husband then dialed 911.
It is not clear how many victims died by gunshot versus by fire, but causes of death will be determined by autopsies.
Emergency crews have spent the day attempting to recover the family’s bodies.
Meanwhile, the duo of wounded officers were released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center Thursday afternoon.
Officer David Schiazza, a 22-year law enforcement veteran, gave a thumbs up and a wave as he was driven away from the hospital.
Officers from multiple police departments across Philadelphia and Delaware County lined up outside the hospital to salute and applaud Schiazza.
“We’re happy about that. He is going home to his family,” Delaware County District Jack Stollsteimer said.
“The hero that he is, he doesn’t even want people to even know his name.”
East Lansdowne Police Officer John Meehan, a 22-year law enforcement veteran, remains in the hospital after being shot in the left arm.
Meehan needs a lengthy surgery and his recovery time is unknwon.
Both officers were shot when responding to a 911 call on Lewis Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
Upper Darby Police had to use ballistic shields to drag them to safety off the street.
“I can’t thank Upper Darby police officers enough for what they did to drag these two gentlemen away from the gunfire,” Stollsteimer said. We might be having a whole different conversation about what happened.”
