Calvin Haskins, 45, was arrested after stabbing three people at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, on Wednesday morning.
The three people stabbed were staff members, with police confirming the employees were two males, and one female.
According to police officials, a male suspect is now in custody and was a patient at the facility.
The victims have been transported by ambulance to ECMC. There has been no update in their conditions although one was reported to be seriously injured.
34-year-old Calvin Haskins of Buffalo was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree assault and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon in relation to the stabbing at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center.
“It has been described — as an unprovoked attack on staff,” explained Detective Craig Macy, Chief of Detectives, Buffalo Police Department.
According to authorities, the victims included a 45-year-old man who suffered wounds to the arm and chest, a 55-year-old man who suffered wounds to the abdomen and chest, and a 52-year-old woman who suffered wounds to the back and shoulder.
All three victims are described as stable. One of the men’s injuries was serious and he underwent surgery Wednesday.
According to officials, the incident happened at about 9:08 a.m. Wednesday in the Strozzi Building.
Calvin Haskins, a patient of the Psychiatric Center, used a hunting knife to attack the three employees.
Macy says officers took Haskins into custody without any trouble however, they are still yet to ascertain how he got the knife he used.
“This area of the complex is not a guarded area, as far as having to go through metal detectors. There is people that come in and out of there, so there is no screening process for weapons and they were stabbed with a knife,” said Macy.
Haskins has a criminal history. In 2013, he was charged with attempted murder after police say he stabbed a man 17 times at a Metro Rail Station in downtown Buffalo. He pleaded “not responsible” because of his mental state, which is why he was at the psych center in the first place.
Buffalo Psychiatric Center provides inpatient, outpatient, residential, vocational and wellness services to adults with serious mental illnesses.
This facility treats chronically, persistently ill patients who require long-term inpatient psychiatric care.
It has 186 beds divided into seven units that each serve 25 to 27 individuals.
Primarily, the center accepts transfers from the psychiatric units of general hospitals in the area, taking on individuals who need extended rehabilitation and recovery services.
Most have severe psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
