Who is Brandon Scanlon? Middle Island Man Shot and Arrested After Striking Police With Vehicle and Fleeing

Brandon Scanlon of Middle Island was arrested by Suffolk County Police Friday after striking an officer with his car and leading authorities on a 25-minute car chase involving multiple exchanges of gunfire.

A suspect was shot by officers in Bay Shore following an attempted arrest and then a pursuit, police say.

Police were conducting a confidential investigation in Bohemia and tried to arrest 33-year-old Brandon Scanlon, of Middle Island when the suspect fled in a minivan, knocking over an officer in the process.

Police say they chased Scanlon from Bohemia to Brentwood where gunfire was exchanged multiple times between officers and the suspect.

Scanlon finally crashed his minivan in Bay Shore into a tree on North Sunrise Highway Service Road, east of Robert Moses Causeway, at approximately 7:20 p.m. after sustaining a gunshot wound.

Police transported him to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Five officers were also transported to the hospital for evaluation.

A ghost gun was pulled from Scanlon’s vehicle.

Scanlon was facing drugs and weapons charges previously and is now facing additional charges of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree and Assault 2nd Degree.

Police say he could be hit with more charges in the coming days ahead of his arraignment.

Middle Island is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 10,483 at the 2010 census.

It is situated between the hamlets of Coram and Ridge, to the west and east, respectively, and Rocky Point and Yaphank to the north and south.

The name derives from the fact that it lies approximately halfway between the eastern and western ends of Long Island (Montauk Point and the East River) as well as halfway between the northern and southern boundaries (the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean).

As of the 2000 census, there were 9,702 people, 3,720 households, and 2,548 families residing in the CDP.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 85.45% White, 7.58% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.44% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.87% of the population.
